Organized Bookmarks Manager

In this section I will address Chrome’s bookmarks manager which is Google’s bookmark organizer. There are many free web browsers out there and you decide which the best web browser is for you.

What is a web browser? It is a program used to view internet web pages on your computer.

Basic Computer Terms,How to Be Organized,Tony Bastos

I use Google Chrome as my default web browser and I find it fast and reliable.

Is it the fastest web browser? Of the web browsers that I have tried, I have found it to be the fastest for the kind of web browsing that I do.

Chrome offers a “Help” page which will answer all the questions that you may have on how to search the internet. Open your Google Chrome home page and press “F1”.

Type what you need help with and bingo!

I will show you how to use your Chrome’s bookmarks manager to sort out your folders. Look at the screenshot below as I will be referring to those items which I have indicated with arrows.

Bookmarks Bar

Use the bookmarks bar only for web sites that you use on a daily basis. These icons will be visible at the top of all your web browser windows.

We will use the page that you are on to show how to add a web site link to your bookmarks bar.

1.

Click on the “Bookmark Icon” (indicated by the blue arrow above). The “Bookmark Added!” dialogue window will open.

2.

The default name for this page is “Organized Bookmarks Manager”. If you want to give it a new name, type it into the “Name” field now.

If you are happy with the default name, click to open the drop down menu next to “Folder”.

3.

Select “Bookmarks Bar” and click “Done”.

You have now added this page to your bookmarks bar.

If you cannot see this new addition on the bookmarks bar, it means that the visible space of the bar is full. You need to click on the “>>” symbol on the right to view the hidden web sites.

Other Bookmarks

Here you can create folders that describe the genre of sites and sub-folders which will further narrow the categories.

Look at the screen shot of my bookmarks manager below to see how I have organized my folders under “Other bookmarks”.

The left side of the window above shows the “Bookmarks bar” folder which I have highlighted. The right side of the window shows all the web sites which I have bookmarked to my “Bookmarks Bar”.

Below the “Bookmarks bar” folder on the left, you see all the folders which I have created. In some of these folders I have created additional sub-folders, such as “Building”, “Computer”, “Consumer Help” as well as others. All folders with the right pointing black arrow icon (>) on the left contain additional sub-folders. By clicking on the arrow you will open the sub-folders.

Adding Folders and Sub-Folders

We will now create a folder (Self Help) and a sub-folder (Web Browser) and add them to the “Other bookmarks” tree.

Again we will use the web page that you are on.

3.

Select “Other bookmarks” and click “Edit” to open up the available list of folders which you previously created.

“Self Help” will not be part of the list so you need to create it.

4.

Click to select “Other bookmarks” and then click on “New Folder”.

Type “Self Help” and press “Enter”

5.

Next we will create a sub-folder of “Self Help” and we will call it “Web Browser”.

Click to select “Self Help” and click on “New Folder”.

Type “Web Browser” and press “Enter”.

Now click “OK” to close the dialog window and save the link to “Organized Bookmarks Manager” in your “Other bookmarks” tree under Self Help/Web Browser.

♥ Tip ♥

If you are searching several sites looking for goods or services for something that you are working on at the moment, create a folder as I have done called “Current Projects”. You may not want to keep all the bookmarks once you have finished with your search. Then go back, delete the links that you do not want and move those that you want to keep into other folders.

Organizing Bookmarks Alphabetically

The folders that you add to your bookmarks folders are not stored alphabetically.

To organize bookmarks alphabetically, you need to open your bookmarks manager.

1.

Place the mouse pointer anywhere over your “Bookmarks Bar” and right click.

Click on “Bookmark manager”. The “Bookmark manager” opens in a new tab on your web browser.

You will see the folder “Self Help” below “Wellbeing”.

2.

Click to select “Other bookmarks”.

Next click on “Organize” and “Reorder by title”.

All the sub-folders under “Other bookmarks” have now been reordered alphabetically.

♥ Some More Tips ♥

  • Whenever you need to sort folders alphabetically you follow the same procedure as above. Click to select the main folder; you will see the sub-folders on the right side window. Then click on “Organize” and “Reorder by title”.
  • If you need to move sub-folders or web site links into other folders drag it from the source and drop it into the destination folder.
  • You can also add additional folders directly. Place your mouse pointer over the folder into which you want to add a sub-folder, right click and click on “Add folder”. Type the description in the new folder and press enter. Creating folders is dealt in my section “How to Create and Organize Windows Folders” which you can access via my “Site Content” navigation bar link.

Close the “Bookmark Manager” tab by clicking on the “x” in the tab label at the top.

Deleting Bookmarks and Folders

If you wish to delete any folder or individual web site bookmarks, do it like you would any file or folder.

Place the mouse pointer over the folder or file that you wish to delete and right click.

Then select “Delete”.

Warning!

Whatever you delete from your “Bookmarks manager” does not end up in your recycle bin. It will be deleted forever. Whenever you delete a folder, you will also be deleting all its contents.

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer go to How to Organize Favorites.
