The Types of Fears 

We have actually identified and named over 500 types of fears! Here is a list of fears which I have extracted from Wikipedia. This page is in no way intended to put you in a state of fear but to highlight our obsession with labeling everything, including our greatest fears. 


Take a look at some of the fears that we have identified.

Ablutophobia – fear of bathing, washing, or cleaning

Achluophobia – fear of darkness

Agoraphobia - fear of open spaces or of being in public places. Fear of leaving a safe place

Ailurophobia – fear of cats

Anthophobia – fear of flowers

Anthropophobia – fear of people or the company of people, a form of social phobia.

Aquaphobia – fear of water. 

Atychiphobia – fear of failure

Autophobia – fear of being alone or isolated or of one's self

Chaetophobia – fear of hair

Chromophobia – fear of bright colors

Chronophobia – fear of time and time moving forward

Cibophobia, Sitophobia – aversion to food, synonymous to Anorexia nervosa

Cyberphobia – fear of or aversion to computers / Learning new technologies

Decidophobia – fear of making decisions

Disposophobia – fear of getting rid of or losing things – sometimes wrongly defined as "compulsive hoarding"

Ergophobia – fear of work or functioning

Gamophobia – fear of marriage, commitment

Gelotophobia – fear of being laughed at

Gerascophobia – fear of growing old or aging




Hadephobia (also stigiophobia and stygiophobia) – fear of Hell

Halitophobia – fear of bad breath

Heliophobia – fear of sunlight

Hylophobia – fear of trees, forests or wood

Hypnophobia or somniphobia – fear of sleep.

Ichthyophobia – fear of fish, including fear of eating fish, or fear of dead fish

Ipovlopsychophobia – fear of having one’s photograph taken.

Mysophobia – fear of germs, contamination or dirt

Neophobia, Cainophobia, Cainotophobia, Centophobia, Kainolophobia, Kainophobia – fear of newness, novelty

I am not really sure whether all these types of fears are really true, but they are certainly fascinating, especially the next one.

Nomophobia – fear of being out of mobile phone contact

Nosophobia – fear of contracting a disease

Nyctophobia, Achluophobia, Lygophobia, Scotophobia – fear of darkness

Oikophobia – fear of home surroundings and household appliances

Ombrophobia – fear of rain

Ornithophobia – fear of birds




Panphobia – fear of everything or constant fear of an unknown cause

Papaphobia – fear of the Pope

Phagophobia – fear of swallowing

Philophobia – fear of love

Phobophobia – fear of having a phobia or of fear

Scopophobia – fear of being looked at or stared at

Sociophobia – fear of people or social situations

Somniphobia – fear of sleep

Stygiophobia – fear of Hell

Technophobia – fear of technology (see also Luddite)

Thermophobia – fear of heat

Uranophobia, Ouranophobia – fear of Heaven

Xenophobia – fear of strangers, foreigners, or aliens
